Comparison between the Tactics and Philosophies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X - 1100 Words

Comparison between the Tactics and Philosophies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X (Essay Sample) Content: COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TACTICS AND PHILOSOPHIES OF MARTIN LUTHER KING AND MALCOLM X Name Instructor Course Date Comparison between the Tactics and Philosophies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are some of the most historic figures in the US. Their legacy is mostly associated with the civil rights movement where they played a significant part in bringing an end to systemic racial injustices to the people of color. They both had an important role to play in advocating for the rights of African Americans and other minority groups in the 1960s in the US. However, while they both championed for the same course of emancipating the people of color, they employed different approaches to promoting their ideologies over what constituted freedom for the Blacks and other groups. Furthermore, they both differed in how they pushed for the agenda. These differences in their approaches have prompted some commentators to state that the two leaders were not friendly to each other and that they could not see eye-to-eye. However, there are many areas of similarities and differences that exist between the two leaders. This paper will analyze some of the similar ities and differences in the tactical approaches and philosophies that both Martine Luther King Junior and Malcolm X employed in advancing their courses. The paper begins by describing their backgrounds to comprehend how it influenced their approach to leadership.[Howard-Pitney, D. (2004). Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s: A brief history with documents. Boston, Mass.: Bedford/St. Martin's., p.38.] [Waldschmidt-Nelson, B., Waldschmidt-Nelson, B. (2012). Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s: A brief history with documents. Boston, Mass.: Bedford/St. Martin's..p..47.] Historical Background Malcolm X emerged as a courageous young leader in the 1960s fighting against racism and violence against the Blacks. He had a troubled childhood after his father was murdered while he was only six years old. His mother was subsequently placed in a mental hospital when Malcolm X was 13 years. He lived in a series of foster homes with different relatives and friends throughout his childhood. He was incarcerated at the age of 20 for charges of breaking and entering. It is while in prison that he joined the Nation of Islam (NOI), where he eventually rose to become one of its topmost leaders. However, he later became disillusioned by the organization's leadership and direction under Elijah Muhammad, subsequently quitting the organization in 1964 to embrace Sunni Islamic views. He was later assassinated by members of the NOI in 1965.[Simmons, G. Z. (2008). Living It Out: Martin Luther King Jr. Revisited. Living It Out: Martin Luther King Jr. Revisited. Journal Of Feminist Studies In Religion (Indiana University Press), 24(2), 189-213., p.197] Martin Luther King, on the other hand, was a minister in the Baptist church; King endeavored to use Christian values of love and respect for each other in promoting civil disobedience through peace protests. His main objective was to promote racial equality. He was originally from Atlanta, Georgia, a state that was caught up in the middle of racism. He first rose to national prominence in 1955 when he participated in the Montgomery Protests in support for Rosa Parks, an African-American woman who had been arrested for her civil disobedience. Dr. King successfully led a grassroots movement that culminated in the Montgomery bus boycott. In 1957, Dr. King formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) along with other prominent religious leaders in the South with the objective of organizing non-violent protests with their African-American congregations. Dr. King was arrested for about 30 times during his involvement in the civil rights movement. He is widely known for his el oquence and leadership philosophy that revolved around peaceful protests.[Waldschmidt-Nelson, B., Waldschmidt-Nelson, B. (2012). Dreams and nightmares: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and the struggle for Black equality in America. Gainesville: University Press of Florida., p.83] [Worthington, B. (2013). Martin Luther King Jr. As Identificatory Conglomerate. Black Theology: An International Journal, 11(2), 219-239., p.200] [Waldschmidt-Nelson, B., Waldschmidt-Nelson, B. (2012). Dreams and nightmares: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and the struggle for Black equality in America. Gainesville: University Press of Florida., p.46] Similarities There are various similarities between the approach and leadership philosophy that both Dr. King and Malcolm X employed. One similarity that stands out is their religious approach in promoting their courses. Both Malcolm X and Dr. King were devoted religious men preaching in the mosque and church respectively. As such, religion played a key role in their leadership. Secondly, both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Junior were very eloquent speakers. Therefore, they used their eloquence to give powerful and motivating speeches to their audiences to convince them to join in their course. Both Malcolm X and Dr. King spoke with passion and to young people and people from ghettos and underprivileged areas.[Simmons, G. Z. (2008). Living It Out: Martin Luther King Jr. Revisited. Journal Of Feminist Studies In Religion (Indiana University Press), 24(2), 189-213., p. 200.] Differences Malcolm X's philosophy revolved around the need for granting African Americans their civil rights using any means necessary. He considered it necessary for violence to be used in other cases if need be in order to ensure that the African Americans received the freedom they demanded. As such, this approach embraced using both legal and illegal means to achieve what they wanted. Besides, while he was a member of the Nation of Islam, he propagated the ideology that African Americans were superior beings that directly came from God while the whites were devils. Consequently, his approach was very radical harsh and demanded that whites and Blacks be separated in order to ensure that the Blacks had the much-needed freedom.[Worthington, B. (2013). Martin Luther King Jr. As Identificatory Conglomerate. Black Theology: An International Journal, 11(2), 219-239., p. 222.] [Miller, W. J. (2013). "Don't Turn Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ : Langston Hughes, Barack Obama, and Martin Luther King, Jr. African A merican Review, 46(2/3), 425-438., p. 427] On the other hand, Martin Luther King promoted the philosophy of non-violent disobedience, which involved peaceful protests and demonstrations. Dr. King promoted the integration of Whites and Blacks in the American society as opposed to the separationist agenda that was propagated by Malcolm X.[Worthington, B. (2013). A Speech I Wrote for School free essay sample

As long ago as 1864, countries sent representatives to Geneva, Switzerland to discuss the treatment of military personnel as well as civilians in wartime. Throught history â€Å"rules of war have been formulated with 3 additional conventions. In the time between 1864 and 2005 192 countries have ratified the laws. Torture should be prohibited against suspected terrorists and war criminals because it is against the law, inhumane, and will give the US a bad name for years to come. First, torture is against the law. The Geneva Conventions state that during wartime no wounded or captured military personnel and civilians may be subjected to torture in any way. Nearly all the countries have ratified the Geneva Conventions so they are considered customary international law. There is no need for torture because you cannot inflict physical or mental pain on purpose. It states this in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 5 states that â€Å"No one shall be subjected to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. We will write a custom essay sample on A Speech I Wrote for School or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page † This simply states that no suspect can be subject to torture in any way. There have been numerous other documents that have raised the same issues. Second, torture is inhumane. The Abu Ghraib Scandal is a perfect example of torture. In May 2004 there were many accounts of torture in the jail in Baghdad. The torture was so inhumane that I cannot go into further detail about the type of torture used. This went against the Geneva Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All of American citizens were so shocked when they herd the excruciating pain that the prisoners went through. The situation gets worse. Our government covered it up. There are many types of torture. The most severe is Water Boarding. It is when a prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised head slightly below feet then Cellophane is wrapped over face of prisoner and water is poured over him. Gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning brings them to an almost instant plea to stop. The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law, said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch. Bad interrogation. I mean you can get anyone to confess to anything if the tortures bad enough, said former CIA officer Bob Baer. There are many more cruel types of torture, all cruel and inhumane. Third this will give the US a bad name for years to come. Everything in history is documented. The torture that we are using is going to be documented and for years to come will be taught to the point where other countries will view us as bullies. It will hurt our citizens for years to come. As we continue torturing people the count of terrorists will rise, not decrease. In the United States we cannot bring this information gathered to a courtroom because it is fabricated, or created, confession. Then the suspect went through the pain and suffering for no apparent reason. Some people say that we must use torture. They say this because they think that is you want to get information NOW that it is the only way. They also say that in the Military Commissions Act of 2006 the President gave the CIA the right to use torture. But they have no clue what they are talking about. This is against the law and is inhumane. Others don’t even think it is happening. They are oblivious. Did they not look in the news in 2004 when pictures of abuse were released from The Baghdad jail? Or they listen to President Bush’s Military Commissions Act of 2006 where he stated, â€Å"As Ive said before, the United States does not torture. Its against our laws and its against our values.† But he has lied! We have used torture and so it is not against our values and laws. Especially when recently President Bush vetoed a law restricting torture. This raises issues that go against what President Bush said in 2006 and now we need torture when before we didn’t use it because it is against our values. In Conclusion, Torture should be stopped because it is against the law, inhumane, and will give us a bad name for years to come. We all must do something to stop it. Share with your friends and make the President relies that it is still happening and he must put a stop to it. One of the ways we can is to stop the permitting of allowing under trained and low ranking military personnel the right to engage unsupervised interrogations of suspected terrorists and captives of war.

Themes Of The Glass Menagerie Essays - English-language Films, Films

Themes Of The Glass Menagerie ?The Glass Menagerie? is a play that contains intense human feelings; frustration, shyness, regretfulness, anger, and sadness. The play is set in the apartment of the Wingfield family. In this cramped, dinghy place lives three characters; Amanda, Laura, and Tom, who are desperate to make their dream come true. Amanda is a shrew, she wants to live through her daughter, Laura. Her dream is for her daughter to marry to a well-educated man and support her throughout the rest of her life. Amanda always make complaining remarks about her husband who had left her with Tom and Laura. Amanda nags Tom for spending too much time watching movies instead of working and finding a suitable for Laura. She likes to brag about how many Gentleman callers came to her house to pursue her. Tom is the narrator of the play. His dream is to be a poet and have no responsibilities to his family. He works at a warehouse, which he doesn't appreciate because it avoids him to complete his dream. He detests when his mother tell him what to do and how to do it, sometimes he has to act without pity. Laura is shy and has a low self-esteem. She is compared to her glass collection, fragile in every sense. As an effect of a childhood illness, she was left crippled, which made her think that she was less than everybody else. She avoids socializing because she is afraid of breaking up, however this changes when she sees her old crush, Jim O'cconor. Her dream is to feel good about herself and to get out of her depression. Each character desires to escape from this lifestyle, poverty is what has them trap. The fire escape provides a different purpose for each of the characters. From the opening of the play, Tom's addresses the audience from the fire escape. The fire escape allows Tom to get out of the apartment and away from his nagging mother. Amanda sees it as an entrance for the Gentleman callers to enter their lives. Laura hides inside the apartment not in the fire escape. The fire escape separates authenticity from the undiscovered. Tom escapes in more than one way, first is the fire escape which leads him away from his home, then the movies. The movies temporarily takes him to another world, where mothers and runaways fathers doesn't exist. He also gets away by drinking. He wants to escape his responsibilities of taking care of his mother and sister. He wishes to have a life of his own. Laura finds an escape through her glass collection. She also finds relieves in playing the same old record day after day. Across their apartment is the Paradise Dance Hall. Perhaps the music floating up to the apartment from the dance hall is supposed to be her escape which she just can't take. As time goes it's getting harder and harder for Tom to avoid the real world, and the time for him to leave comes. When he leaves , he feels guilty for abandoning Laura . However, he discovers that he hasn't escaped, but led himself onto a path of even more powerful desperation. The theme escape is used throughout the play to demonstrate the hopelessness of each character's dreams. For the characters, an escape is possible, however, in the end no one finds a clear break.
